In Greenville County, more than 60,000 neighbors struggle to put food on the table. At the same time, millions of pounds of good food would otherwise be discarded.
In 2024, the organization rescued 2.5 million pounds of surplus food and redistributed it, free of charge, to more than 100 partner agencies across Greenville County. That food represented over $9 million kept in our local economy and equated to an estimated 2.1 million meals reaching individuals and families experiencing food insecurity.
Through its “Five Communities in Five Years” plan, Loaves & Fishes is expanding access in underserved areas by convening local leaders, identifying gaps, and strengthening neighborhood-based food infrastructure. From supporting school-based pantries to increasing culturally relevant food for immigrant families, the organization listens first and acts in partnership.
When Hurricane Helene left more than 160,000 homes without power, Loaves & Fishes mobilized quickly, coordinating emergency deliveries, preserving unexpected frozen donations, and redirecting thousands of meals where they were needed most. In crisis, they are a trusted logistics partner within Greenville’s safety net.
One volunteer and graduate of Front Porch Housing shared how weekly food deliveries helped stabilize her family during a season of homelessness and recovery. What began as assistance became healing, purpose, and service. “Food is the glue that holds us together,” she reflected.
By rescuing 2.5 million pounds of food in 2024, Loaves & Fishes also prevented an estimated 9.5 million pounds of methane from entering the atmosphere, demonstrating that community well-being and environmental responsibility can advance together.
Loaves & Fishes connects donors, nonprofits, schools, volunteers, and neighbors into a coordinated network that ensures no good food goes to waste while anyone in our community goes hungry. Their work strengthens the safety net and reinforces dignity, one delivery at a time.
